How to get cited by ChatGPT: getting your pages linked as a source

In short

ChatGPT cites a page only when it searches the web, and only pages its search step can reach and read. To be cited, a page has to let OpenAI’s search crawler in, rank in the search results ChatGPT draws on, and contain short, self-contained passages that answer the question with facts. Research on AI answers found that adding sources, quotations and statistics helped pages get used, while keyword stuffing did not. Citations also fade within weeks, so pages need to be kept current and checked again.

How to get cited by ChatGPT: the short answer

To get cited by ChatGPT, a page has to pass three gates: the crawler can read it, the search behind ChatGPT can find it, and it holds a passage worth quoting. Fail any one and the other two do not matter.

PAGES ONTHE WEBTHEASSISTANTTHEANSWER
ChatGPT reads several pages for a question and links a few as sources. Getting cited means being one of those pages.

A citation is a link. When ChatGPT searches the web it attaches citations to its answer, and a Sources button lists the pages it cited along with other relevant links. OpenAI’s help page describes both, and adds that "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" (OpenAI help).

Being cited is not the same as being named. A review site can be cited while it names you, and your own page can be cited while the answer recommends someone else. If your goal is your brand’s name in the answer, read how to get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT as well.

The three gates a page passes before ChatGPT can cite it, what decides each one, and how to check it yourself.

2. It can be foundThe page is indexed and ranks in the search results ChatGPT draws onSearch the question in Bing and in Google
3. It is worth quotingA short passage on the page answers the question with factsRead the page as if it were cut into sections

Gate one: let the crawler in

ChatGPT will not cite a page in its search answers if your robots.txt turns away OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI’s search crawler. This is the cheapest gate to check and the most common one to fail by accident.

OpenAI's crawler page says: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." It also recommends "allowing requests from our published IP ranges", and says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers).

Training is a separate switch. GPTBot collects pages that may be used to train OpenAI’s models, and you can block it while still allowing OAI-SearchBot. The full set of crawlers, the lines to put in robots.txt and the firewall traps are in our guide to getting your website to show up in ChatGPT.

Gate two: be found by the search behind it

ChatGPT cites pages that its search providers return, so a page that is not indexed, or ranks far down, is rarely in the pool. Ordinary search work is the floor here, and that includes Bing.

OpenAI says ChatGPT rewrites a question into search queries and sends them to search providers, and its help page lists Microsoft and Shopify among them (OpenAI help). In a study of more than 500 citations from about 100 questions, Seer Interactive found that more than 87% matched Bing’s top 20 results for the same question, against 56% for Google (Seer Interactive). That study dates from February 2025 and is small, so treat it as a strong hint.

Microsoft's own guidelines list what helps Bing discover a page: "IndexNow URL submission", "XML sitemaps", "Crawlable internal links" and "External links from relevant websites" (Bing Webmaster Guidelines). IndexNow is a simple way to tell search engines a page has changed, so they do not wait for their next visit.

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your XML sitemap there.
  2. Turn on IndexNow, which many site platforms offer as a setting or a plugin.
  3. Link to each important page from at least one other page on your site, in plain HTML links.
  4. Search your buyer’s question in Bing and note which pages rank. Those are the pages you are competing with for the citation.

Gate three: be the page worth quoting

Among the pages it finds, ChatGPT can only quote what it can lift cleanly. Short sections that each answer one question, with facts, numbers and sources, give it something to lift.

Microsoft's guide for its own AI search explains why. Assistants "break content into smaller, usable pieces", a process it calls parsing, and those pieces are ranked and assembled into answers (Microsoft Advertising). The guide was written for Bing and Copilot, but the same logic applies to any assistant that quotes passages.

  • Use a heading that states the question, then answer it in the first one or two sentences.
  • Keep each section to one idea, so a lifted passage makes sense on its own.
  • Put facts in text: a price, a size, a date, a count. Microsoft warns against key details placed only in images, tabs or PDFs.
  • Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons. Both are shapes an assistant can lift whole.
  • Name your sources, with links, for any claim you did not measure yourself.

There is research behind the last point. The GEO study, published at KDD 2024, rewrote pages in nine ways and measured how much of each page appeared in AI answers (Aggarwal and others).

Selected rewrites tested in the GEO study and what the authors reported. The test used the top five Google results and an older OpenAI model, plus a smaller test on Perplexity. It did not test ChatGPT search.
RewriteWhat it meansWhat the paper reported
Cite SourcesAdd citations to credible sourcesOne of the top three, which together gained 30% to 40% on the main measure
Quotation AdditionAdd quotes from relevant, credible sourcesOne of the top three. Best on Perplexity, at 22% over the baseline on the main measure
Statistics AdditionUse numbers instead of vague claimsOne of the top three. Also gained in the Perplexity test
Keyword StuffingAdd more words from the queryLittle or no gain. About 10% worse than the baseline on Perplexity

The main measure was the share of the answer’s words that came from the page, weighted by position. Results varied by topic, and the authors advise changes suited to each domain.

One more finding is useful for a smaller site. The paper reports that pages ranked lower in search gained more from these rewrites than pages ranked first. For the page in fifth place, citing sources raised its visibility by 115.1% in their test. You do not need to be the biggest site to be the clearest one.

The lower a page ranked in search, the more these rewrites helped it.

Relative change in visibility, in percent, by where the page ranked in search before it was rewritten. Pages ranked first lost ground with all three rewrites.

A worked example: one page, rewritten

Here is how the three gates look on a single page. The business, the page and every number below are made up for this example.

Say a small company sells a scheduling app for dental clinics. Its buyers ask ChatGPT "what is the best scheduling software for a small dental practice". The company has a features page, but ChatGPT never cites it. The owner works through the gates in order.

  1. Gate one. The robots.txt allows every crawler, but the firewall blocks unknown bots. The owner adds OpenAI’s published IP ranges to the allow list.
  2. Gate two. Bing has never indexed the page. The owner verifies the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submits the sitemap and turns on IndexNow.
  3. Gate three. The page opens with a slogan and hides the price behind a button. The owner rewrites it so that each section answers one question in its first sentence.

The rewritten page has a heading that reads "Scheduling software for dental practices with one to five chairs". Under it, one sentence says what the product does and for whom. A table compares plans, with prices in text. A short section cites the dental association guidance the reminders follow, with a link. An FAQ answers the four questions buyers ask most.

None of this guarantees a citation. It does mean that when ChatGPT searches for "dental practice scheduling software", the company’s page can be read, can be found and has a passage that answers the question. Before the rewrite, it failed all three.

Notice what the owner did not do. They did not add the phrase "best scheduling software" ten times, and they did not write fifty thin pages for fifty towns. The evidence above says neither helps.

Citations fade, so keep pages current

A citation is not a position you keep. One large study found most pages lose half their citation share within two weeks of their peak, so a cited page needs updating and checking again.

Profound, which sells AI visibility software, followed 883,000 cited pages across seven assistants for twelve months. It found that "the median page loses half its citation share within 11 days of peaking", and that 78% of cited pages fell to half their peak within two weeks (Profound). It also grouped longer-lasting pages by what they are for.

How long cited pages kept their citations, by kind of page, among the 133,000 pages Profound classed as sustained. Half-life is the days from peak until a page falls to half its peak share.

Treat a citation as a result for this month, not a ranking you own. Update the page, then check again.

In practice, that means a cited page needs an owner. Re-read it each quarter. Update the price, the figures and the date. Add the question buyers started asking since you wrote it.

The same study found one thing that predicts a longer life: being cited by several assistants. Profound reports that a page cited by five or more of the seven was 5.5 times as likely as a page cited by one to still hold half its peak share after eight weeks.

Pages cited by more assistants held on to their citations for longer.

How to know when you are cited

OpenAI does not offer site owners a report of ChatGPT citations, so you have to check answers yourself or use a tool that does. Bing offers a citation report for its own AI answers, which is a useful neighbour.

Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026. It shows "how publisher content appears across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations", with citation counts per page and the "grounding queries" the AI used (Bing Webmaster Blog). Microsoft does not name the partners, so do not read it as a ChatGPT report.

For ChatGPT itself, the honest method is to ask. Put each buyer question to ChatGPT with search on, several times, and open the Sources panel each time. Record which of your pages were cited, and for which questions. Repeat on a schedule so you see the fade as well as the wins. Our page on AI citation tracking explains how a cited link is matched to your site.

Prompt

What is the best tool for scheduling social media posts across several platforms?

Topic: Scheduling

Response

The best tools for scheduling social posts across several platforms are usually schedulers built for small teams. The ones recommended most often are Northline, Kestrel and Everdene, with each platform’s own scheduler as a free fallback.[1][4][7]

For planning a month ahead, the strongest options by use case are:

- Northline: queues posts for every platform from one calendar.[1][3]

- Kestrel: picks the best time to post from past engagement.[4]

- Everdene: manages many client accounts, with an approval step before posting.[7]

One answer, read for the two things that matter here: whether you were named, and whether a page of yours was cited. Illustrative.

Agentcites does this work on a schedule. It asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and DeepSeek the questions your buyers ask, every week, and keeps every answer word for word along with the pages it linked. It emails you once the first time an assistant cites a page you recorded as published, and it checks whether five AI crawlers are allowed on your site. How we measure shows how a link is matched to your site, and the pricing page lists what the plan includes.

How we measured this

This guide was written on 10 October 2026 from public sources read that day: OpenAI’s crawler documentation and its help page on searching the web, Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster Guidelines, its post on AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools and its guide to content for AI search answers, the Seer Interactive study, the GEO paper from KDD 2024, and Profound’s study of citation decay. Figures are quoted as each source reports them.

It does not include any measurement of our own. It does not explain how ChatGPT chooses between pages that pass all three gates, because OpenAI has not published that, and the outside studies it cites used their own question sets and dates.

Questions

How do I get my website cited in ChatGPT answers?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, make sure the page is indexed and ranks in Bing and Google, and write short sections that answer the question with facts and sources.

Why does ChatGPT cite my competitor instead of me?

Usually their page ranks for the search ChatGPT ran, or answers it more directly. Search the question in Bing and compare their page with yours, section by section.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?

No. GPTBot is for training. OpenAI says citations in search answers depend on OAI-SearchBot, which is a separate switch.

How long does a ChatGPT citation last?

Often not long. Profound reports the median cited page lost half its citation share within 11 days of its peak, across seven assistants.

Can I see how often ChatGPT cites my site?

OpenAI offers no such report to site owners. You can check by asking questions and reading the Sources panel, or use a tool that does this on a schedule.
